That underarm sting is not a character-building experience. If you are wondering which deodorant ingredients cause irritation, the answer is usually not one single bad guy. Natural deodorant is not automatically gentle. Conventional deodorant is not automatically harsh, either. Your underarms are thin-skinned, warm, frequently shaved, and tucked into a high-friction zone all day. That makes them particularly good at announcing when something is off.
Which Deodorant Ingredients Cause Irritation Most Often?
A red, itchy, burning, bumpy, or flaky underarm reaction can be irritant contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction, friction, folliculitis, or even a rash made worse by heat and moisture. The label can offer useful clues, but it cannot diagnose the cause on its own.
Fragrance and essential oils
Fragrance is one of the most common sources of deodorant trouble. That includes the catch-all label term “fragrance” or “parfum,” as well as naturally scented essential oils.
