Types of hair porosity

Low porosity: Has a tightly packed cuticle layer that repels water, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate. Products can sit on the surface, so it's important to use products that can be absorbed and rinse well. 

Medium porosity: Has a slightly raised cuticle layer that allows moisture to enter and be retained easily. This is generally considered the easiest hair type to manage. 

High porosity: Has gaps and spaces in the cuticle, allowing moisture to be absorbed quickly but also lost just as fast. This hair type is prone to frizz, dryness, and breakage. 

How to test your hair porosity

A simple at-home test can help you identify your hair's porosity.  
Take a few clean, dry strands of your hair. 
Drop them into a bowl of water. 
Observe if they sink or float: 

If they float, you likely have low porosity hair. 
If they sink slowly, you likely have medium porosity hair. 
If they sink quickly, you likely have high porosity hair.
